A Short, Sweet History of Sugar House, Utah

It wasn’t until 1853, six years after Brigham Young famously led the Latter-Day Saint wagon train into Salt Lake Valley, that Sugar House was established. Its adorable name comes from the local sugar mill, which extracted sucrose from the roots of sugar beets. Sadly, the sugar beet industry quickly flopped, with the sugar mill being converted to an equally ill-fated wool processing and bucket factory, although in 1930 an obelisk was built in the center of the neighborhood to commemorate the beet sugar effort. The name stuck: in 1928, the mayor at the time, John Bowman, suggested changing the name to South East Salt Lake City, a proposition that was almost immediately and unanimously rejected.

Sugar House was home to the first prison in the state of Utah, Sugar House Prison, which lasted from the late 19th century until it was closed in 1951 and all inmates moved to the prison in Draper. The prison was demolished and in its place Sugar House Park and Highland High School were built. It was around this time that Sugar House began to establish itself as a commercial hub. In fact, one of the streets was called “furniture row,” due to the three major furniture retailers located there. With the extension of the streetcar system and other infrastructure, Sugar House continued to steadily expand as a shopping district.

Sadly, during the 1980s, Sugar House experienced a sharp rise in crime rates, but in recent decades the neighborhood has been intensely revitalizing itself, and is now popularly considered a trendy location that appeals to young professionals. Even businesses located outside of Sugar House’s technical borders use its name for marketing purposes. Sugar House remains a desirable area to live in due to its strip malls, major businesses, schools, office buildings, and more. That said, throughout the process of redevelopment, officials of Sugar House are committed to retaining the old-fashioned, quaint, “Main Street” feel of the neighborhood, unlike the other metropolitan Salt Lake areas or its more modern suburban areas. This old-timey charm with its quiet, tree-lined streets, together with its bubbling night life, is likely why it has become such an attractive place for young adults. Indeed, the Westminster College students – and even those from the nearby University of Utah – have given Sugar House the breath of fresh air that many of its residents believe it needs.
