Dental care is something that many of us often take for granted. We probably had its importance drilled into us when we were younger (pun intended). Sadly, as people grow older and approach the later years of our lives, we often stop attending the dentist so regularly. Sometimes we stop because of mobility issues, or perhaps sometimes because we feel that our teeth are a lost cause.
If you find yourself looking at worn out discolored teeth or even teeth that no longer exist, you may feel like there is little that a dentist can do now anyway. This may have been true in the past, but advancement in dental technology allows an experienced dentist, like ours here at Canyon Rim Dental Salt Lake to fix almost any dental problem!
Many Dental Issues are Easier to Solve Than You Might Think
As we get older, our teeth take on stains and our teeth can become darker. Unfortunately there is little that we can do to stop this from happening, but we can reverse the effects through teeth whitening. A teeth whitening procedure can make a significant difference to the whiteness of a person’s teeth and can make a person appear years younger with a simple one-hour procedure.
Proper Function of Your Teeth is Paramount
Perhaps more important for those older patients, even those into their eighties and beyond, are the procedures which bring greater functionality to their teeth. This is especially important as older people often tend to reduce the number of foods that they can eat to the difficulty that they have in chewing them. This, in turn, can reduce the nutritional intake which they need to remain in good health.
We Offer Advanced Treatment Options to Restore Beautiful Smiles
So what are the procedures that advancements in dental technology have made possible? Bone grafting, dental implants, implant supported dentures, sinus augmentation are some of the procedures that we often see benefiting our elderly patients.
For individual teeth, a straightforward dental implant is probably the best option available as this will provide a long-term solution by replacing the missing tooth with a replacement artificial one which is strong and sturdy.
Many of our older patients already have dentures, but often find that they have become loose and difficult to use when eating. Dental implant technology allows the dentures to be fixed into place by using an all on four procedure, meaning all of the teeth are placed on four dental implants. This procedure has some advantages in that the teeth are fixed into place by the dental implants and do not have to be removed for cleaning. They are also tightly fixed to the jawbone which means that the patient can eat whatever they like. Also, because mini implants are used in this procedure, there is not the problem of thinning jawbone which can be the case in older people. Usually, this would require a bone graft but using the mini implants avoids this process.
Because of these advanced dental procedures, even older adults can benefit by not only improving their appearance in their later life but also by enjoying their food once more while at the same time, receiving the nourishment that they need for a long and vibrant life.
